12 Year-old Syrian boy – without a home

I met this child around midnight in the back streets of the old town of Damascus, Syria. I was walking alone through a dark alley and I saw the silhouette of a young child lit by a lighter as he lit his cigarette.

I do not know where he was going, I assume to where his sleeping spot is, after a day of collecting recycling in order to sell for a few cents.

You think you have issues in your life, and then you meet a child who struggles each day just to continue existing.

I gave him a little bit of money (wish I had given him more in hindsight) – and then asked if I could take his photo.
He hid his cigarette behind his back with one hand, and stood still for me.
Most people would smile and act up a little when you put a camera on them, this kid didn’t change his expression one bit. I could feel his sadness.
